Core Forms vs Happyforms: Customizer Builder Versus a Form Backend
Happyforms builds forms in the WordPress Customizer. Starter is $89 a year without Stripe. Pro puts payments on 3 sites. Core Forms bundles payments on unlimited sites.
Happyforms is a WordPress form plugin that builds inside the Customizer, with a live preview and a dashboard that tries to stay out of the way. Core Forms vs Happyforms is the choice between that Customizer workflow and a plugin that stores HTML, takes payments on every license and can accept posts from a static host.
I build Core Forms, so you should know. Happyforms’ prices below are from happyforms.io/upgrade in September 2026, including a $60-off Pro sale they were running. The free plugin is enough for a simple contact form, and there are cases where you should stay.
There are generally three ways people buy Happyforms.
You can stay on free in the Customizer and never pay.
Or you can buy Starter at $89 a year, get files and signatures, and still not have Stripe.
But being extreme isn’t a good idea at all. Happyforms is an important “feels like WordPress” builder. It is wise to stay on free or Starter while that is the brief, and to compare Core Forms when payments, unlimited sites or a form that is not the Customizer become the job.
Happyforms is a Customizer form. Core Forms is a form you can also open in a code tab.
Starter still has no Stripe. Pro is 3 sites. Core Forms is unlimited.
Quick Verdict
Happyforms is the better pick when you want to build in the Customizer, you like their live preview, and a contact form or a Starter feature set is the whole need.
Core Forms is the better pick when you need Stripe or PayPal without jumping to Pro, when you run more than 3 sites, or when you want licensing, polls and headless HTML. It is $59 a year or $249 once, unlimited sites.
Happyforms Pro at the $99 sale is close to Core Forms yearly for 3 sites. At the $159 list price, and at Unlimited $399 a year, Core Forms is the smaller number.
Price
All Happyforms paid plans are billed yearly. 14-day refund. September 2026:
| Plan | Sites | Price | What it unlocks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Happyforms free | Unlimited | $0 | Customizer builder, basic fields, email |
| Happyforms Starter | 1 | $89/year | Conditional logic, multi-page, save and resume, submission limits, files, signatures, reCAPTCHA. No Stripe, PayPal or email-marketing integrations |
| Happyforms Pro | 3 | $159 list, $99 on the sale they were showing | All features, including Stripe, PayPal, Mailchimp, Zapier, no transaction fees |
| Happyforms Unlimited | Unlimited | $399/year | Same as Pro, unlimited sites |
| Core Forms Yearly | Unlimited | $59 | Everything included |
| Core Forms Lifetime | Unlimited | $249 once | Everything included |
Their FAQ is unusually honest about canceling: without a subscription you can export submissions, and you are locked out of the plugin in WP-Admin. Core Forms yearly cancelled is still a plugin on disk. You lose updates and support, not the admin UI, unless you uninstall it.
The Customizer
This is Happyforms’ house.
You build the form the way you build a widget, with a live preview. The interface is familiar to anyone who has used the Customizer. Gutenberg is supported. There is no code tab. There is no Elementor canvas. There is no WS Form breakpoint grid.
Core Forms is a form post with a visual builder and a code tab. The Gutenberg block picks the form. The Customizer is not the editor.
If “it should feel like WordPress core” is the brief, Happyforms wins the room. If “I already have HTML” is the brief, Core Forms wins it.
Payments and Integrations
Stripe and PayPal sit on Pro, not Starter. Starter at $89 a year is files, signatures and multi-page without taking money. Core Forms includes Stripe, PayPal, Razorpay and Polar on every license.
Mailchimp, ConvertKit, MailerLite, ActiveCampaign, Zapier, Make (listed as Integromat) and SureTriggers sit on Pro. Core Forms ships native actions for those jobs it supports. The integrations page is the list.
No plugin-side transaction fees on Happyforms Pro. Same on Core Forms.
Signatures are a Happyforms Starter feature. Core Forms does not ship a signature field.
Polls, Headless, Inbox
Happyforms is a form plugin with a submissions database and a blocklist. Native polls, full-screen surveys, first-party field drop-off, form scheduling and a REST embed for Astro are Core Forms features.
Happyforms does not claim to be a software license server. Core Forms does.
There is no Happyforms importer on Core Forms > Migrate. Rebuild.

- Free is enough for contact.

- You already like their support voice and 3 sites of Pro is the whole world.
When to Pick Core Forms
- You need payments on 1 site without Pro. Starter does not include Stripe.

- You sell software, run polls, or post HTML from another host.
- You write markup and want it stored as HTML.
The Limits
Happyforms prices are from happyforms.io/upgrade in September 2026, including a $60-off Pro sale. Plan on $159 a year for Pro if the sale ends.
Canceling Happyforms locks the admin UI. That is their published policy. Export first.
No speed numbers. Researched comparison.
Core Forms needs WordPress 6.4+ and PHP 8.1+.
Final Remarks
Happyforms vs Core Forms is whether you want to build in the Customizer or own a form backend.
Stay on free or Starter while that is the job. Buy Pro if 3 sites and Stripe is the ceiling. Buy Core Forms when unlimited sites, licensing or HTML-off-WordPress show up, because $399 a year is the Happyforms answer to unlimited and $59 is ours.
The pricing page has the Core Forms terms. The Contact Form 7 comparison is the other simple-WordPress fork.
