Core Forms vs Forminator: Free Quizzes Versus a Bundled License
Forminator's free plugin includes forms, quizzes, polls and one-time Stripe. Core Forms is paid, with licensing, headless REST and no WPMU DEV membership. Here is which one to pick.
Forminator is WPMU DEV’s form, quiz and poll plugin. The free version on WordPress.org is generous: contact forms, payment forms, quizzes, polls, Stripe and PayPal for one-time charges, and a list of integrations. Core Forms vs Forminator is the choice between that free suite and a paid plugin that adds licensing, headless HTML, first-party analytics and a single lifetime price without a membership.
I build Core Forms, so you should know. Forminator free is a real product, and there are sites that should stay on it.
There are generally three ways people run Forminator.
You can stay on free forever for forms, a poll and a one-time Stripe donation, which is a lot of plugin for $0.
Or you can buy Forminator Pro for Stripe subscriptions, PDFs, geolocation and e-signatures, and then notice Pro is either a per-site fee or a WPMU DEV membership that also sells hosting.
But being extreme isn’t a good idea at all. Forminator free is enough for a lot of brochure sites. It is wise to stay there until subscriptions, PDFs or a software license are the actual job, and only then compare Pro and Core Forms.
Forminator is a free suite. Core Forms is a paid form backend that also sells software.
Free quizzes are the Forminator win. Licensing is the Core Forms win.
Quick Verdict
Forminator is the better pick when you want forms, quizzes and polls for free, with one-time Stripe or PayPal, and you are fine inside the WPMU DEV builder.
Core Forms is the better pick when you need license keys, Razorpay or Polar, WordPress as a headless form backend, or a lifetime license that is not a membership. It is $59 a year or $249 once, unlimited sites.
Forminator Pro is the better pick when you need PDFs, geolocation or e-signatures on the form itself. Core Forms does not ship those three as fields.
Price
Forminator free is $0, unlimited sites. Pro, from WPMU DEV’s Forminator page in September 2026:
| Plan | Sites | Price | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Forminator free | Unlimited | $0 | Forms, quizzes, polls, one-time Stripe and PayPal, many integrations |
| Forminator Pro Basic | 1 | $50/year | Stripe subscriptions, PDF, geolocation, e-signature |
| Forminator Pro Standard | 3 | $75/year | Same Pro features |
| Forminator Pro Plus | 10 | $100/year | Same Pro features |
| WPMU DEV Premium | Unlimited | $4.99/month on a 3-month promo, then membership pricing | All WPMU DEV plugins, hosting extras |
| Core Forms Yearly | Unlimited | $59 | Everything included |
| Core Forms Lifetime | Unlimited | $249 once | Everything included |
Forminator Pro is cheap per site if you only need the four Pro extras. The membership is a different product: you are buying WPMU DEV, not only a form plugin.
Core Forms refunds within 14 days. WPMU DEV advertises a 30-day money-back guarantee on that page.
What Free Forminator Already Includes
This should go first, because it is the reason Forminator has 600,000-plus installs.
Free includes a drag-and-drop builder, payments through Stripe and PayPal, registration forms, save and resume, repeatable fields, calculations, conditional logic, reCAPTCHA, hCaptcha and Turnstile, custom styling, quizzes and polls, plus integrations such as Mailchimp, HubSpot, Google Sheets, Slack, Trello, webhooks and n8n.
That list is closer to a paid plugin than to Contact Form 7. A lead form, a poll and a $10 Stripe product can live here without paying.
Core Forms has no free version. Quizzes with personality results and BuzzFeed-style sharing are a Forminator strength. Core Forms has a quiz template and scored calculator patterns, not a viral-quiz product.
Polls exist in both. Forminator treats polls as a first-class type with images and instant results. Core Forms does too, with scheduling, a voter hash and a 15-second live results option.
What Pro Adds, and What Core Forms Adds Instead
Forminator Pro, from the same page, unlocks:
- Stripe subscriptions
- PDF generation from submissions
- geolocation and address autofill
- an e-signature field
Core Forms does not have a PDF generator, a Places autocomplete or a signature field. Gravity Forms and Formidable also use a signature as a paid extra. If the form must capture a signature or spit out a PDF, Forminator Pro is the straight purchase.
What Core Forms includes that Forminator’s Pro page does not treat as the product:
- Razorpay and Polar, plus FluentCart for carts
- license keys, activations and a customer area for software
- HTML as the form, with a code tab
- headless REST and an embed script for Astro or Next.js
- first-party field drop-off analytics stored in WordPress
- form scheduling by date, weekday and overnight time windows
- migrate from Contact Form 7, Gravity Forms, WPForms, Fluent Forms, Ninja Forms and Formidable
Stripe subscriptions are Forminator Pro. Core Forms does one-time charges on the form, with subscriptions through FluentCart Pro today and Stripe subscriptions on the Core Forms roadmap.
Builder and Membership
Forminator is a visual builder with a lot of field types. Core Forms is HTML you can also drag. If the team never wants to see a <label>, Forminator is more comfortable. If the team already writes forms, Core Forms does not hide the markup.
The other difference is commercial. Forminator Pro is a WPMU DEV product. Updates, Hub Connector, cloud templates and the membership catalog come with that ecosystem. Core Forms is a single plugin from Gatilab, sold on its own lifetime or yearly license.
Neither model is wrong. Mixing a WPMU DEV membership with one form plugin you wanted is how bills get confusing. Mixing Core Forms with a host you already have is the other way around.
When to Pick Forminator
- You want free forms, quizzes and polls. Stay on free.
- You need PDFs, geolocation or e-signatures. Buy Pro.
- You already pay for WPMU DEV and Forminator is one more plugin in the same dashboard.
When to Pick Core Forms
- You sell plugins, themes or digital downloads with license keys.
- You need Razorpay, Polar or FluentCart, or a form that posts from a static site.
- You want a lifetime license that is not a membership.
- You write HTML and want the inbox, spam stack and payments in the same plugin.
There is no Forminator importer listed next to the six plugins Core Forms already migrates. Plan on rebuilding, or stay.
The Limits
Forminator Pro prices are from wpmudev.com/project/forminator-pro/ in September 2026. Membership promo prices change. Free-plugin install counts change.
This page does not treat changelog volume as a verdict. Both plugins ship updates. Both need backups.
Core Forms needs WordPress 6.4+ and PHP 8.1+.
Final Remarks
Forminator vs Core Forms is whether free quizzes are the product, or whether the form has to sell software and live off WordPress.
Stay on Forminator free while it covers the brief. Buy Forminator Pro for PDFs and signatures. Buy Core Forms for licensing, headless HTML and a lifetime price that does not pull in a host catalog.
The pricing page has the Core Forms terms. The Contact Form 7 comparison is the other free-plugin fork, and the Typeform alternatives piece is the quiz-and-survey fork that is not a WordPress plugin.
FAQ
Is Forminator free enough for a contact form and a poll?
Yes. That is the honest free-tier win. Core Forms charges for that same pair because the license is one bundle.
Does Core Forms import Forminator forms?
Not as a named source on the Migrate screen. Contact Form 7, Gravity Forms, WPForms, Fluent Forms, Ninja Forms and Formidable Forms do import. Forminator forms are a rebuild.
Can Core Forms do Stripe subscriptions like Forminator Pro?
Not as a native form subscription today. FluentCart Pro handles recurring products. Stripe subscriptions on the form are on the Core Forms roadmap.
