How the calculation works
Use an eligible invitation count
Remove known bounces, duplicates, test addresses, and people who were never eligible to answer. Otherwise the denominator is inflated and the response rate looks worse than the actual survey reach.
A response rate is not a quality score. A high rate can still produce biased answers if the invitation list excludes an important customer segment or the questions push respondents toward one answer.
Improve the invitation before adding more questions
State who is asking, why the answer matters, how long the survey takes, and when it closes. Then make the first screen match that promise. A long form hidden behind “two minutes” damages trust.
Use form analytics to separate invitation problems from form problems: views show who reached the form, starts show who engaged, and completions show who finished.

What is the survey response rate formula?
Divide valid responses by eligible invitations and multiply by 100.
Should bounced emails remain in the invitation count?
No. Remove confirmed bounces and other ineligible records from the denominator when you can identify them reliably.
Is response rate the same as completion rate?
No. Response rate compares responses with invitations. Completion rate compares completed surveys with people who started or opened the survey, depending on the stated definition.
What is a good survey response rate?
There is no universal target. Relationship, channel, audience, incentive, survey length, and timing all change the baseline. Compare like with like and report the counts.
How many more responses do I need?
For the current invite pool, multiply invitations by the target percentage, round up to a whole response, and subtract responses already received.
